African Connections

Zamani Productions, Valeria and Rainer Doost take you inside African cultural practices in the Diaspora and the motherland, Africa. Some programming you might see

  • Zamani Beginnings - How Zamani Refuge began in Tombstone, Arizona on a 160-acre off-the-grid retreat. Examples of building with paper-crete, dry farming in the sonoran desert, Helldorado Days, and Orisa dance by Pupy Insua.
  • Being Yemoja - osunyemi/Valeria Watson-Doost interviews Michelle Hertzberg on 'Being Yemoja', the Yoruba deity of the ocean. Shot on location in Bisbee, Arizona, with footage of initiation, and a meditation on Yemoja.
  • Highlander Center 75th Anniversary - 60 min. Since 1932, Highlander has gathered workers, grassroots leaders, community organizers, educators, and researchers to address the most pressing social, environmental and economic problems facing the people of the South. Highlander has played important roles in many major political movements, including the Southern labor movements of the 1930s, the Civil Rights Movement of the 1940s-60s, and the Appalachian people's movements of the 1970s-80s. Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. are two of the many people who trained in non-violent protest at Highlander.
  • Pigah View First Meeting - 30 min. Valeria and Rainer Doost of Zamani Refuge, Bob White and Tasha Skyes, residents of Pisgah View Apartments and Craig White of the Center for Participatory Change, discuss a collaboration in the Peace Garden to train youth to produce shows for URTV.
  • Pisgah View Activist – Robert White and his wife Lucia Daugherty, founders of the Pisgah View Apartments Community Peace Garden, give an inside look at their activism. Both at one time were voluntarily homeless and presently live in public housing. They have become the voice of the poor and voiceless in Asheville. The Peace Garden is transforming the way the community deals with each other and showcases how they solve their unique problems on their own. Many Asheville activists are joining with Bob White as he changes hearts and minds in the garden.

Michael Clark and Accem Scott, teachers who have traveled to China to study the martial and healing arts, show you simple ways to relax, have fun and take care of your body at the same time. The core of the show is Tai Chi and Qigong (pronounced “chee gung”), Chinese exercises that combine gentle movement, meditation, self-massage and relaxed breathing. Tai Chi is a “meditation in motion” that brings balance and inner peace. Research has shown that it relieves stress, lowers blood pressure, increases immune function and improves flexibility. The producers are open to including all styles of conscious movement and invite teachers of Tai Chi, Qigong, yoga, dance, NIA, martial arts, drumming and related arts to contact Michael@HeavenAndEarthTaiChi.com to propose new 5-10 minute segments. Jonathan's Journey SERIES

Jonathan's Journey, a regular series on Sundays, is not so much a travel log as it is the personal spiritual journey of the producer, Jonathan Selby. This is a continuation and combination with his previous program Shawn's Cafe (Combined with Jonathan's Journey July 2008). Shawn's Cafe was a regular series looking back on and following the life of its producer, Jonathan Selby, who has led an interesting life so far and shows no sign of stopping.

You can see through his eyes and hear through the ears of his camera as he travels about wherever the Spirit leads. He shares his own inner-most thoughts and feelings as he likewise seeks out others to share theirs as well with his personal interviews and "Surveys".
